Our Old Hickory team had one of its better results, finishing second at Waahi Taakaro on Thursday (Nov 8).
However, the big winner was Totaradale who won easily to take a commanding lead into the final round of the Club of the Year race which will be played at Takaka on December 5.
Led by 36 stableford points from Grant Fergusson and 35 from Phil Sellers, we totalled a so-so total of 131 in good golfing conditions on our home course to head the chasers. Captain Ian Hanford (33) and Lloyd Moyle (27) were the other scorers, while Richard Pearson (27) and Jack Denton (25) failed to fire.
Totaradale made no race of it, amassing 145 points thanks to the round of the day from John Cullen who posted a fabulous 42 points, with R O'Toole (38) and the evergreen Elton Netto (35) providing strong support.
Tasman came home a close third with 130.
Previous competition leaders Takaka finished a disappointing fourth on 123. They were followed by Motueka (119) and Greenacres (117), with Nelson taking home the popgun after recording just 115 points.
John Cullen and Tony Fleming (Tasman) shared the twos booty. Surprisingly, just four golfers in the 44-strong field collected 36 or more points.
So with just the last round to play, Totaradale are odds-on to win the season-long trophy. With 1872 points, they have a 26-point lead over Takaka. Next are Motueka (1825), Nelson (1768) and Greenacres (1766), while Waahi Taakaro (1752) and Tasman (1745) will battle out it for the wooden spoon.
