Our Old Hickory team will need to step it up if they are to defend their Club of the Year title this year.
After the fourth round earlier this month at Motueka, which was won narrowly by the home team, Waahi Taakaro have slipped to fourth 53 points behind competition leaders Motueka who have opened up a handy lead over Tasman and Takaka.
With its win at home, Motueka have climbed to 744 points, with Tasman (724) and Takaka (712) the nearest chasers. Waahi Taakaro is next on 693 followed by Nelson (685), Totaradale (672) and Greenacres (668). The Golden Downs/ Redstone team trail the field on 657.
Led by Bernie Walsh (34 stableford points) and Mike Hay (33), Motueka took out the Old Hickory trophy for the month with a total of 128. This was three better than Tasman (125) for whom Eric Satherley (36) starred.
Greenacres claimed third on 123, with Robert Murray (33) their top scorer.
Thanks to the top individual scorer of the day, Norman Hensley with a fine 38 points, Golden Downs/Redstone were next on 120.
Waahi Taakaro shared fifth with Takaka after both totalled 119 points.
Bryan Ramsey and Graham Eggers were our best with 31 points each, while our other counters were Barry Rhodes (29) and Barry Mitchell (28). Dave Huntley (26) and Phil Sellers (25 had days to forget.
Nelson finished seventh on 112, with Totaradale (111) taking home the popgun for coming last.
Just two players in the 48-player field played to or better than their handicaps.
The next round is at Takaka on June 4.
