One of our former club presidents, Ron Smith, has died. He was 86.

Ron was president from 1984-89 and was instrumental in developing the club.

An engineer for Reliance in Nelson, he played a key role in projects such as putting a top storey on the clubrooms, building the footbridge on the 18th hole and siting the golf shop.

A keen sportsman, he was known for his hard work, knowledge and community service with a number of different organisations.

Ron was a true club stalwart, holding most positions at one time or the other, including serving as club captain and patron.

His funeral was held on Thursday Nov 2 at St Barnabas Church in Stoke, which was attended by a number of club members. He is survived by his three children and eight grandchildren.

We send our heartfelt condolences to his family and give thanks for his dedicated service to our club.
