Sarel shines in mixed vets

Sarel Nienaber scored his best ever gross to sweep to a win in the Simplicity Funerals mixed vets stableford competition at Waahi Taakaro on Monday (April 15).

The Nelson 13-handicapper shot a 79 off the stick for a nett 66 and an impressive 42 stableford points to head the field of just over 40 golfers.

He won the best gross on a countback from local member Peter Watson, who finished in a four-way tie on 38 points.

Waahi Taakaro's Bryan Ramsey grabbed second on countback from Pat Melville who in turn pushed Watson back into fourth and Patrick Adamson of Greenacres into fifth. 

Tom Trainer of Totaradale was alone on sixth on 37 points. He was followed by top woman Joyce Wast (Greenacres), Robert and Brian Murray (both Greenacres) on 36 points. 

Chris Ruddlesden (Greenacres), Phil Sellers (Waahi Taakaro) and Robert Horrocks (Nelson) rounded out the top 12 on 35 points.

Among the 9-holers Terry Kelso (Waahi Taakaro) with 19 stableford points, headed John Shaw (Waahi Taakaro) on 18 points. They were followed by Marguerite Minchin (Nelson) and Barry Flowers (Waahi Taakaro) on 17 points.

Twos were scored by Robert and Brian Murray and Sarel Nienaber.
