Sloan team notches a win

Our Sloan team has scored its second win of the season thanks a strong showing from the higher handicappers.

With our junior and intermediate players unbeaten, we surged to a 4-2 win over Murchison at Tasman on Sunday (June 10).

The win keeps us in sixth place in the inter-club competition standings with 21.5 points, well behind perennial leaders Motueka on 33.5 points, although they are still to have a bye.

We were given the best possible start when our juniors both won their matches easily. Pat Melville - maybe helped by having got used to Tasman's tricky greens at the Old Hickory earlier in the week - romped to a 9/8 win to maintain his unbeaten season. Steve Russell coasted to a 6/5 win in a highly promising debut.

Elton Netto made it three from three with a 3/2 victory, while his fellow intermediate Dean Goodman enjoyed a walkover after his Murchison rival failed to front.

However, our seniors found the going much tougher, with Keri Kotua going down 5/3 after a tough day on the greens. Rob Willems was thumped 6/5, although his opponent did shoot an excellent 5-over 73 while Rob managed a 79.

While we are out of the title reckoning, pride will still be at stake when we play the next round at Greenacres on June 24.
