Solid second for Old Hickory team
- 6 March 2025
- Peter Watson
Our Old Hickory team finished a solid second at Totaradale behind the home team on Thursday (March 6) which was good enough for Waahi Taakaro to take an early lead in the club of the year race after two rounds.
Golfers enjoyed perfect autumn conditions, which saw slightly better scoring.
Barry Rhodes was one of eight in the field of 44 who either matched or bettered their handicap, with his fine 38 points anchoring our team. He was well supported by Mick Leggett, Dave Huntley and Peter Watson who all posted 34 points in our total of 140. Ian Hanford (32) and Bryan Ramsey (26) were our non counters.
Totaradale - led by the leading individual John Cullen with an excellent 39 points and Denis Hall with 37 - won handily with a total of 147.
Third was Tasman on 138, with Martin Strange leading the way with 37.
John Frater's 37 points helped Motueka claim fourth on 135, while Robbie Dyce collected the same number of points as Takaka finished fifth on 133.
Nelson (127) consigned Greenacres (123) to the dreaded popgun.
Surprisingly no-one managed a two on greens that were more difficult than usual to judge after being sanded and verti-cut.
After finishing third in the first round at Nelson, Waahi Taakaro (399) holds a narrow lead over Totaradale (397) in the club of the year points race. They are followed by Motueka (386), Greenacres (383), Nelson (374), Tasman (372) and Takaka (352).
The next round is at Takaka on April 3.
