Mike Murphy turned it on in the Monday (Oct 7) sun to win the monthly district vets tournament on his home course.

The 25-handicapper top the standings at Waahi Taakaro on a pristine day for golf with 43 stableford points. He went out in a blistering 41 before cooling on the back nine with a 49 for an excellent 90 off the stick.

It was just good enough to edge Tasman evergreen Eric Satherley who garnered 42 points. Elton Netto, with 41 points, finished third and was one of six Waahi Taakaro players in the top 10.

Motueka's Richard Deighton (a former Waahi Taakaro member) and Dave Wilson of Tasman were next with 40 points. They were followed by the Waahi Taakaro pair of Peter Watson, who shot the best gross with a 79, and Paul Tunnicliff on 39 points.

Two more locals Richard Pearson and John McGougan and Lindsay McLennan of Greenacres rounded off the top 10 with 38 points each.

Cherie Hancock of Totaradale headed the women's grade with 30 stableford points followed by Jan Overall  of Motueka and Lynne Johnstone of Totaradale with 29 points each.

Scoring was generally good with the field of 43 enjoying the condition of the course, particularly the greens which have improved markedly under greenkeeper Arnold Witteveen's watch. As a result, there were five twos which went to Mike Murphy, Jack Denton, Paul Tunnicliff and Nelson pair Robin Knight and Peter Falvey.

The next round is at Tasman on November 4.
