Waahi Taakaro Scramble

Some fun golf with friends, a scrumptious barbecue and a few cold ones afterwards in the clubhouse again proved a winning combination for Mike Greer Homes Waahi Taakaro's annual three-person scramble held on the Maitai Valley course on Saturday (March 21).

Twenty-four teams took part in the popular event where the golf comes second to having a good time.

However, that didn't prevent some seriously sharp scoring, with the winning team of Donna Dawson, Andy Isle and Geoff Halkett carding a net 58.83 after going round the course off the white tees in 69.

This was just an agonising 0.01 better than the combo of Pete Green, Keri Kotua and Craig Barron who came in with a 58.84 after tearing it up with a marvelous 63 off the stick - the best gross of the day - which included nine birdies and nine pars.

Next was the team of Darren Quinnell, Tony Lewis and Brendan Doyle with a net 60.34 on the back of a gross 68.

They were followed by the trio of Gavin Stones, James Townsend and Tom Ellis on 60.84 (67), the Mike Greer Homes threesome of Keegan Murphy, Jason and Trevor Lineham on 61 (73), the father and sons team of Ian, Zachery and Kobe Bridgen on 61.34 (72) and the local combo of Bryan Ramsey, Paul Adams and Martin Lubransky on 61.5 (71).

The novelty prizes went to Darren Quinnell for the longest drive on No 17, while Alyce Graf did likewise among the women. Jason of Mike Greer Homes was closest to the pin on No 5/14 and Peter Watson matched this on No 2/11.

Our special thanks go to our sponsors Mike Greer Homes, Placemakers, Tides Restaurant, Tasman Mako Rugby Union, Sprig and Fern Milton St, Wyatt Crockett of Stirling Sports, Lewis Wilson and his helpers for providing and cooking the seafood for his renowned BBQ and Maurice Woodhouse for donating wine from his cellar.

Hats off also to greenkeeper James Dale and course volunteers for getting the course in excellent condition, tournament convenor James Campion and his team and club manager Tony Lewis for another successful event and golf club staff Heather Carey, Brendan Doyle and Martin Lubransky for their work behind the bar and in the lead-up to the event.

Roll on next year.
