Gareth Edwards knocked out reigning Junior A grade champion Brendan Doyle on Sunday in a nail-biter to make the club champs final at his first attempt.

However, Gareth - a relative newcomer to competitive golf  and the fourth seed - did it the hard way, coming from two down after nine holes then losing the lead on the 18th before eventually winning it on a nervous 19th hole with a double bogey.

Their semi-final off the blue tees was all square after three with Gareth taking the first with a par and Brendan doing likewise on No 2. Gareth edged ahead with an excellent par on the uphill No 4 but the big-hitting Brendan - who qualified second - responded by winning the next two with pars to take the lead. He lost the next but won No 8 with a par and the par-five No 9 with a super birdie to finish the front nine with a 42 and a two-up lead.

Gareth kept himself in it with a fine birdie on the par-five No 10 but Brendan parred No 11 to restore his cushion. Neither played the No 12 well but Gareth's double bogey was good enough for a win. They halved No 12 and 13 with bogeys and pars. Gareth got his nose back in front by winning the downhill No 15 with a bogey and No 16 with a par as Brendan's radar went on the blink.

After halving No 17 with bogies, Gareth went to the testing last with a one-up lead but could only manage a double to Brendan's bogey. Both struggled on the first extra hole but Gareth's double saw him finally prevail

He will play top seed Graham Galt in this Saturday's (Oct 19) 36-hole final.
