- Peter Watson
The quarter-finalists of the Individual Matchplay have been found after the second round ties threw up a mix of surprises and sure things on a frosty but sunny Saturday (June 10).
At the top of the draw, Jonathan Tuheke and Dean Goodman were locked in a tight struggle until Jono won their last three holes for a 2/1 victory as Dean's game deserted him. Until then neither player could make a decisive break with the lead swapping several times.
Aaron Kotua got a free pass after Neil McLaren was unavailable.
Richard Denby had to give Graham Galt 15 shots and it proved just too big a hurdle to overcome in the heavy conditions, with Graham prevailing 2/1 after shooting a steady net 73 from the blue tees playing off a 23 handicap.
Mike Murphy proved far too steady for Garth Jameson in winning 5/4, while Peter Watson overcame a 14-shot start to defeat Mike Savage by the same margin despite both struggling for consistency.
Lewis Wilson was another to proceed through to the next round after Peter Green was a late withdrawal.
Mike Williams and Paul Tunnicliff were locked in a close tussle until Paul had to unfortunately calls it quits after injuring his elbow.
Keri Kotua - who earlier in the week had beaten Lindsay Brooks 2 up in a delayed first round match - carried too much firepower for Phil Sellers in winning 5/4.
Matthew Watkins made no race of it in the match of the day for those not involved in the matchplay, with the 16-handicapper totalling an impressive 38 stableford points. Lewis Wilson took second on countback from Chris Louth after both came in with 31 points.
Richard Kingsford was the best of the 9-holers with a respectable 16 stablefords. Lloyd Moyle took second on countback from Errol Guthardt after they recorded 13 points apiece.
Dean Goodman - with a chip in on No 5 - and Andy Isle - who eagled the long No 6 - shared the twos money.
