Club results for 10/8/24

  • Peter Watson

Neil McLaren and Dave Blake are the Brebde senior/junior champs for 2024 after a comfortable 3/2 win over Peter Watson and Maurice Woodhouse on a sunny Saturday (Aug 10).

They won the opening two holes - thanks to a par with a shot and then a birdie two from Neil - and never surrendered their advantage, with Peter having to give Neil five shots, Maurice eight and Dave nine.

Neil - who played particularly well over the opening nine holes carding a net 34 off the stick -  took them three ahead with a good downhill putt on No 4 for a par. The margin grew to four when Peter - who endured a poor front nine - missed a short putt for par on No 8.

Maurice reduced the margin to three at the turn by winning No 9 after both Neil and Dave made a mess of the hole, but it was back to four up when Dave birdied No 11 from short range after a pinpoint short iron.

Maurice won No 12 with a six to provide some hope and Peter parred No 14 and 15 but they were only good enough for halves as Neil and Dave held firm to go dormie. It ended at the next hole when Peter narrowly missed his birdie and Neil drained a putt from well off the green for a par and the deserved win.

In the match of the day, which was a net round off the white tees which carried Barkman Trophy points and counted towards Shootout qualification, Paul Tunnicliff played some excellent golf over his first 15 holes in posting a net 72 to take top honours on countback from Jack Denton. Paul's round featured birdies at No 7 and 11.

Their was a logjam of players on 74, but Lewis Denton got third on countback from Andy Isle, Aaron Kotua and Gareth Edwards. Pete Green (75) grabbed the last Barkman point on offer. Pete's 79 was the best gross score of the day.

Twos were worth a pittance as was Pete G's jackpot after he slotted two and Neil, Dave, Paul and Craig Barron got one each.

Among the nine-holers, Paul McCrae was again to the fore, recording a  +2 off the back nine to win the par competition. He was followed by Neil Howard (-1), with Ali Mawby (-2) third on countback from Richard Pearson and Andrew Dean.

Next Saturday (Aug 17) we play the first qualifying round of the club champs which also counts as the first round of the C & F Legal Stroke and the seventh round of both the Barkman Trophy and Shootout. It is both a gross and net round off the blue tees.  The second round of club champs qualifying and the Stroke will be on August 31.

The nine-holers will play a stableford round off the front nine.
