Bryce Vincent made the final of the NBS Club Champs intermediate grade the hard way, finally getting the better of Gabriel Tijsen on their 21st hole.

While the golf wasn't always pretty, it was an absorbing contest full of momentum swings.

After winning two holes each in a nervy opening four holes, Bryce hit his straps to win No 5 with a bogey and No 8 and 9 with pars to head into the back nine with a comfortable three-up lead. However, Gabriel took full advantage of some lapses by Bryce to win the next four holes with two pars and two bogeys to grab the lead. Bryce squared it up with a par at No 14 but fell behind again as Gabriel won No 16 with a par. With both in the deep rough off the tee on No 17, Bryce played a fantastic mid iron over trees to set up a winning par to take the match to the last. After wayward drives, they were both off the green in three and couldn't get up and down so the match went to extra holes. They halved both the par five 19th and par three 20th with bogeys after Gabriel missed mid range putts to win before Bryce ended it at the next hole.

He will play Peter Watson in the final after the veteran leftie limped to a 4/2 victory over Aaron Kotua in a match played on Monday.

With both struggling with injury – Aaron coping with swollen knees and Peter a painful hip – it was a battle to play half decent golf.

Peter made the perfect start by winning the first six holes with a mix of pars and bogies but Aaron refused throw in the towel and won the next three, including with two pars and a lengthy putt, to go to the turn three down.

They then shared a cart for the back nine as Peter parred the next three holes for a half and two wins to push the lead out to five. However, Aaron hit back by winning No 13 with a double and then No 14 with a par as Peter found it difficult to swing through the ball. He then blew an opportunity to close the match out on No 15 by three-putting from just off the green but completed the job at the next with a conceded par after Aaron hit tree trouble.

In the match of the day, a net round off the whites which carried Barkman Trophy points and counted towards the Shootout, Roma Elkington took the honours with a net 70. Playing off a 30 handicap, Roma shot 50 for the front nine and the same for the back nine for an even 100.

Andy Isle warmed up for the his Club Champs senior final next Saturday with the best gross score, a 78, for a net 71 and second place, while Peter W cobbled together a 73 for third. Matt Tomczyk took fourth on countback from Garth Jameson after both came in with 75. The final Barkman points went to Pete Green and Duncan Isle who finished sixth and seventh after both recorded 76.

Lewis Wilson fattened his wallet by slotting the only two of the day, on No 14, which had jackpotted from the previous week. He was closest to the pin on No 5/14 while Peter W was nearest on No 2/11.

Warren Carey was the best of the 9-holers, posting a sharp +2 score for the front nine. Sue Moyle returned to form with a +1 to secure second from Mike De Veer on 0. Richard Pearson took fourth on countback from Paul McCrae and Ryan Smith after all carded -1. There were no twos.

Next week (Oct 18) we play the finals of the club champs, with Andy I up against either Pete G or Keri Kotua who play off tomorrow (Sun) in the senior grade. The top two seeds, Peter W and Bryce V, battled it out for the intermediate title. Brendan Doyle takes on the giant killing Lewis W in the Junior A division, while Junior B top qualifier Ian Hanford is up against his closest challenger Andrew Craig. All are 36 holes contests off the blue tees apart from the Junior B match which is played over 18 holes.

For those not involved in the finals, the match of the day will be a net round off the blue tees. The 9-holers will play a net round off the back nine.
