The Brebde Senior/Junior is a bit like the golf version of Married at First Sight without the temper tantrums or quick divorces.

The field is divided in half based on handicap between seniors and juniors and then pairs are drawn out of the hat so you don't know who your partner is until just before tee-off.

Eleven teams were entered on Saturday in the knockout matchplay format, meaning three matches were played in perfect autumn conditions and five lucky teams got byes through to the second round.

At the top of the draw, Craig Barron and Lewis Wilson got the better of Pete Green and Barry Rhodes 2/1. Two up at the turn, Craig - who sensationally birdied No 3 (the number one stroke hole) - and Lewis withstood an early fightback by Pete and Barry which saw Pete make six pars on the trot from No 10 to halve their last three holes for victory.

Peter Watson and Dave Huntley were made to work hard for their 3/1 win over big hitters Matt Tomczyk and Brendan Doyle. Despite playing his first nine holes in even par, Peter and his partner found themselves one down with eight to play as Matt played some heady golf wiith Brendan contributing at vital times. Dave then came to the party, winning three holes on the trot with two pars and a bogey to get them ahead. Peter then iced the win with a par and a birdie two at No 11 to settle the issue.

Paul Tunnicliff and Mick Leggett used a strong second nine surge to cruise to a 4/3 win over Gabriel Tijsen and Bryan Ramsey. Starting on No 7, Paul and Mick had eked out a 2-up lead at the midway point largely due to Paul's steady play but they both combined to win the next three of four holes to double their lead against their misfiring rivals and quickly snuffed out any hope of a comeback.

In the net match of the day for everyone else off the white tees, four players finished on net 71, with Neil McLaren winning on countback from Keri and Aaron Kotua and Lindsay Brooks, who was the unlucky one to miss out on the prizes.

James Campion and Roma Elkington were next on 74 followed by Duncan Isle on 76.

Jason Lee and Peter W shared the twos money, with Peter winning closest to the pin on No 2/11.

James (78) recorded the best gross MOD score of the day.

Andrew Dodson was the best of 17 9-holers who teed it up, winning the par competition off the back nine on countback from Warren Green after both came in with handy +2 scores. Jack Denton was third on +1. Warren Carey took the final competition point on countback from Paul McCrae after both posted 0. Steve Turnell didn't go home empty handed, bagging the only two of the day on No 14.

In a first round women's 9-hole matchplay tie, Barbara Kotua outlasted Donna Dawson, winning on the first extra hole after they were all square after nine. After five halves, both women won two holes in a row to take the match to sudden death.

Next week (April 18) we play the quarterfinals of the Brebde off the blue tees, with Craig Barron/Lewis Wilson v Peter Watson/Dave Huntley, Paul Tunnicliff/Mick Leggett v Jarrod Huss/Mark Clucas, Graham Eggers/Mo Woodhouse v James Campion/Duncan Isle and Neil McLaren/Lindsay Brooks v Andy Isle/Phil Sellers.

The 9-holers play a net round off the front nine.
