The Brebde senior/junior is a bit like Married At First Sight where the lucky few hit it off and the rest of the thrown together couples struggle to get on with each other.

At the top of the first round draw of the matchplay with drawn partners competition on a sunny Saturday , Matt Tomczyk and Maurice Woodhouse found plenty in common against Aaron Kotua and Mark Clucas, losing only one hole in easing to a comfortable 4/2 victory. Both Matt and Maurice played to their handicaps off the blue tees which is a good recipe for success.

James Campion and Warwick King had to fight a little harder before overcoming a steady Graham Galt and Geoff Halkett 2/1. One down with eight to play, they won three holes on the bounce to grab a lead before James sealed the deal with a birdie on the par five No 1.

The highlight of the day was the match which saw Pete Green and Mick Leggett take on Gareth Edwards and Lindsay Brooks that went to the 21st hole before Pete and Mick prevailed. There was some great golf played by all four guys, with both Pete and Gareth grabbing jackpots. Pete binned birdie putts on No 2 and 5, while Gareth chipped in for twos on No 2 and 14. Gareth and Lindsay were three up with six to play before Pete birdied three and parred the remainder to drag it to extra holes where they finally got over the line on No 9. Pete led the way with a marvelous 72 off the stick playing off a five handicap, while Lindsay kept it competitive with a net 68.

Andy Isle and Neil McLaren were another couple on the same page in brushing aside the challenge of Keri Kotua and Jim McMullan 5/4. Andy and Neil - who both shot net 72 - never lost a hole and and closed it out early after being five up at the turn, despite the best efforts of Keri who shot a net 71.

Paul Tunnicliff played the best golf but it wasn't enough as he and Andrew Craig went down to Peter Watson and Dave Huntley 2/1. It wasn't pretty, but Peter and Dave complemented each other at crucial times to survive a comeback after being four up with five to play.

Three other pairings - Jonathan Tuheke/Lewis Wilson, James Barton/Dave Blake and Garth Jameson/Mike Williams - got byes through to the second round which is scheduled for April 19, although if matches can't be played on that date there is leeway to play them before the third round on May 3 providing all players agree.

The quarterfinal line-up will see Tomczyk/Woodhouse play Campion/King, Green/Leggett up against Isle/McLaren, Watson/Huntley take on Tuheke/Wilson and Barton/Blake do battle with Jameson/Williams.

For those not involved in the Brebde, Graham Eggers won the match of the day with a net 78, which included a two.

Ali Mawby was the best of the nine-holers, carding an excellent net 32 off the back nine. Paul McCrae settled for second with a 36, while Lloyd Moyle and Paul Markland were next with 37 apiece.

Next Saturday (April 19) the 9-holers will play a stableford off the front nine.
