- Peter Watson
Two old lefties were at the top of their game for the second round of the Burns Philp Cup on Saturday (Dec 13).
Playing in the same group, Peter Watson and Lewis Wilson, spurred each other on as they tamed the course off the blue tees in perfect golfing conditions.
Peter racked up 44 stableford points and Lewis 42 as they finished first and second in the match of the day.
Peter shot 75 off the stick playing off an 11 handicap for a net 64 which was his best round for several years. He went out in 37 and back in 38 with birdies at the par three No 5 and the uphill No 13 and was denied the jackpot by a lip-out on No 14.
Lewis was almost as impressive in posting a 90 playing off an 24 handicap for a net 66. His round of two 45s included five pars.
On a day of generally good scoring, Gareth Edwards was also on song, shooting an 84 off a 16 handicap for 40 stableford points which would usually be good enough for a win but only earned him third place. His round included a birdie two at No 11
Graham Eggers - fresh from his starring role in our Old Hickory success - was another to play well in posting 39 points to claim fourth on countback from Saturday competition newcomer Harry Ambrose.
Ian Hanford and Phil Sellers were next with 37. They were followed by Keri Kotua (35) and Bryan Ramsey (34).
So after two of four rounds of the Burns Philp (with the best three scores counting), Peter leads with 80 stablefords from Gareth on 78 and Ian on 72. They are followed by Phil and Aaron Kotua on 67.
Super vet Warren Green was also on fire in carding a net 30 off the back nine to dominate the 9-hole field. Playing off a 14 handicap, his fine round included two pars and six bogies. Paul McCrae was a distant second on 34, with Dave Huntley, Jim McMullan and Andrew Dodson sharing third with 35 each. Andrew had the satisfaction of scoring the only two of the day, on No 14.
Next Saturday (Dec 20) we play the second round of the Penketh Plate, which is an all irons net round off the white tees starting at 9am. The 9-holers play a par round off the front nine.
