Neil McLaren set a hot pace in the first round of the Stubberfield Cup on Saturday.

Playing in scorching conditions, the lefthander shot a fine 69 off the white tees and excelled on the greens with just 23 putts to total an imposing 92 in the net plus putts competition.

The 15-handicapper went out in 43 and back in 41 to head the field by four with three more rounds to go.

Steve Russell has endured a wretched year on the golf course when he lost his swing, but his perseverance finally paid off with the best net of the day, a 67. That combined with 29 putts saw him finish a welcome second on 96.

Aaron Kotua – who got up and down well all day – came in third on 99 (71+28), just ahead of Pete Green (71+29) on 100. Graham Galt (71+29) was pushed back to fifth on countback.

He was followed by Andy Isle (74+27), Craig Barron (73+29), James Campion (74+28) and Garth Jameson (76+27).

James’s 75 off the stick was the best gross of the day, while Pete and Graham shared the twos money.

Mike Murphy (33+14) topped the 9-holers with 47 off the front nine from Paul McCrae (34+14).

Next Saturday (Jan 20) we play the fourth and final round of the Burns Philp Cup, which is a stableford off the white tees. The 9-holers play a stableford off the back nine.
