Club results for 15/8/26

The first round of qualifying for the club champs attracted one of the biggest turnouts for some years.

There were some old faces back such as former club champ Nick Riddell who joined relative newcomers to Saturday 18-hole competition like Harry Ambrose, Andrew Bosselmann and Blair Joliffe in the pleasingly competitive field on a pleasant day for golf.

As well as club champs qualification teeing off, the C&F Legal Stroke began while the round also counted towards both the Barkman Trophy and Shootout.

Played off the tough blue tees, scoring was better than in previous years, with the Junior A grade trio of Paul Tunnicliff (net 69), Harry Ambrose (70) and Gareth Edwards (71) leading the match of the day, Stroke and Barkman honours. They were followed by the Senior grade pair of Keri Kotua and Pete Green and Intermediate grade pacesetter Gabriel Tijsen who all posted net 72. Next were Andy Isle (Senior) and Maurice Woodhouse (Junior A) with 73 apiece. Andrew Craig (Junior B) and Richard Pearson (Junior A) completed the top 10 with 74s.

With club champs qualification for the top eight in each grade decided on the best two gross scores over three rounds, Pete G made the best start in the Senior grade (5.0 -10.9) carding 79, the only one to better 80. His nearest challengers are Keri K and James Campion, who both came in with 83 each, and Andy Isle (84).

Gabriel T (85) has a handy lead over Peter Watson (88) among the Intermediates (11.0-15.9), with Jason Lee and Graham Galt (89 each) close behind. Next are the trio of Craig Barron, Matt Tomczyk and Aaron Kotua on 91 apiece.

Paul T and Harry A share top spot in the Junior A grade (16.0-21.9) after shooting excellent 88s, with Gareth E (89) just behind. Richard Pearson (92) remains in touch.

Andrew Craig made the early running in the Junior B grade (22.0+) with a 97. Dave Huntley (100), P Sellers (102) and Lewis Wilson (105) are his closest rivals.

Despite the greens running well, there were just three twos scored, with Aaron K on No 5 and Nick R via a chip-in on No 11 sharing the spoils with Sivina Jacobs Harawira who put her tee shot on No 2 just a couple of feet away from the hole. This was good enough to win her closest to the pin.

Rebecca Gibson has the winning habit and she was at it again on Saturday, heading another good field of 9-holers. Her fine +4 score in the par competition off the back nine edged out Phil Rogers (+3), with James Mead, Chris Louth and Ali Mawby filling the minor places on +1. They were followed by the threesome of Marg Parfitt, Andrew Green and Lloyd Moyle on 0. Again, no-one managed a two so the jackpot grows some more.

Next Saturday (August 22) the 18-holers play another Barkman and Shootout rounds but off the white tees, while the 9-holers play a net round off the back nine.

On August 29 the 18-holers play the second round of club champs qualification and the second and final round of the C&F Legal Stroke. It is also is another Barkman and Shootout round.
