A couple of veteran lefthanders showed that irons are alright as they dominated the second round of the Penketh Plate on Saturday (Dec 16).

Warwick King hasn't played much golf lately because of work commitments but he displayed little rust in winning the match of the day, an all irons round off the white tees.

In heavily overcast but still conditions, the 22-handicapper was out in 46 and back in 45 for a 91, which equated to a excellent net 69.

Peter Watson started with a double bogey but thereafter played some good stuff to finish with the best gross of the day, a 79. His net 72 - which featured 10 up and downs and some powerful 2 irons off the tee - saw him secure second.

Waahi Taakaro's greenkeeper Eric Shurson was third with a handy net 74.

He was followed by Neil McLaren (75), and the trio of Geoff Halkett, Graham Galt and Andy Isle on 76.

Another threesome of Paul Tunnicliff, Steve Turnell and Bryan Ramsey completed the top 10 with 77 each.

Paul - with twos on No 2 and No 5 - walked away with a pre-Christmas jackpot.

Sally Quinlivan won the battle of the 9-holers on countback from Sue Moyle after both recorded tidy net 34s. Bradley Brown was next with 36.

On Thursday (Dec 14) John Dixon - who is awaiting new hip surgery - cast aside the pain to win the last round of the Worley Cup for the year, which was an Irish stableford off the front nine.

His fine 49 points was comfortably ahead of Michael Doyle's 46 points. Ray Hopgood nabbed third with 44 points, just ahead of Andrew Dean and Paul Tunnicliff on 43 each. Richard Pearson (39) secured sixth. Grant Fergusson rolled in the only two of the day on No 2.

And Tom Kennedy won the Guthardt Cup after a tight battle with Ian Hanford over 18 holes. Tom prevailed 1-up after shooting a net 67 in the knockout mathcplay final for Golden Oldies.
