Sixteen golfers have progressed through to the second round of the Individual Matchplay in the late autumn sun.

Some did it the tough way, others cruised through while a lucky four drew byes in what was a healthy turnout for one of our more important competitions.

Scoring was generally high as golfers battled heavy conditions off the blue tees.

At the top of the draw, Matt Tomczyk rallied late to pip Garth Jameson 1up.

Paul Markland made his debut a memorable one after he came from behind over the last two hole to down Aaron Kotua 1up.

Bryce Vincent warmed up for his Sloan Trophy match tomorrow with a dominating 6/5 drubbing of Gareth Edwards. Bryce's net 75 was one of the better scores on the day.

Ian Hanford, with a net 72,  had the measure of Dave Huntley in posting a 4/3 victory, while Dave Blake was another who played solidly in his 3/1 win over Graham Eggers.

Maurice Woodhouse won five holes in a row mid-round to thrash Jim McMullan 8/7. Gabriel Tijsen comfortably got the better of Warwick King 4/3.

Keri Kotua was always in control against Mark Clucas in coasting to a 4/2 victory.

It was much tough for top seed Pete Green who had to get up and down at the difficult No 18 to see off a stiff challenge from Jonathan Tuheke 1up.

Mike Williams shot a net 74 in subduing Lindsay Brooks 2/1, while Chris Louth dealt Geoff Halkett a 4/3 defeat in playing to his handicap.

At the bottom of the draw, Phil Sellers produced the best form of the day, a net 69, in thumping Neil McLaren 5/3.

In the match of the day for those not playing matchplay, James Campion edged Richard Pearson on countback after both recorded net 74. James's 78 off the stick - the best gross of the day - was notable for five birdies and three double bogies, while Richard - who has only recently returned to playing after an injury - rattled home in a pleasing 41.

Four golfers - Pete , James, Aaron and Jonathan - shared the twos money with one each.

Andrew Green was the best of the 9-holers with a net 34. He was followed by Paul McCrae (36).

The draw for the second round of the Individual Matchplay next Saturday (May 24) is: Peter Watson v Matt Tomczyk, Paul Markland v Bryce Vincent, Ian Hanford v Dave Blake, Maurice Woodhouse v Gabriel Tijsen, Richard Pearson v Paul Tunnicliff, Keri Kotua v Pete Green, Mike Williams v Chris Louth and Phil Sellers v Barry Rhodes.
