Gareth Edwards returned to winning form to lead after the first round of the Six-Hole Challenge on Saturday (July 18).
After going through a barren spell in recent months, Gareth rediscovered his game to win all three of his short matchplay group duels.
Playing off a 15 handicap from the white tees after a short delay for frost, he amassed a total of 24 points to lead by three after the first of three rounds of the popular competition which sees groups of four or three players go head to head over six-holes on handicap, with two points for every hole won and one for a half. Those in group of three get a bye and are allocated seven points out of a possible 12.
There was a three-way tie for the minor places with Andy Isle securing second on countback from Andrew Craig who pipped Garth Jameson for third after all came in with 21 points.
Pete Green, Graham Eggers and Peter Watson were next on 20. They were followed by Keri Kotua and Brendan Doyle on 19 and Phil Sellers on 18.
Both Keri and Graham managed a two on the greens which were running nicely, while Pete G was closest to the pin on No2/10. Pete G and James Campion, with 79 each, recorded the best gross scores of the day.
The winter sunshine brought out a big turnout of 9-holers, with 23 teeing it up.
Warren Carey won for the second time in three weeks, recording 19 stableford points for the back nine. Donna Dawson - who sunk a monster putt on No 5 green - was next with 18. Andrew Dodson was third on countback from John Dryden after both finished on 17.
They were followed by a group of four - Jack Denton, Alan Clarence, Jim McMullan and Ali Mawby - on 16. No-one bagged a two,
Next week (July 25) the 18-holers play the second round of the Six-Hole Challenge, while the 9-holers play a par competition off the front nine.
