Doing without his woods for the day didn't do Aaron Kotua any harm as he stroked his way to an excellent net 69 to win the second round of the Penketh Plate on Saturday.

The compulsory all irons round put the onus on crafty course management, straight shooting and a tidy short game, which Aaron displayed in spades in posting an 83 off the stick playing to a 14 handicap.

Bryan Ramsey and the in-form Jason Lee also showed plenty of smarts in carding 71s, with Bryan claiming second on countback.

Next was Neil McLaren on 72, whose round was going great guns until a 10 at No 18.

He was followed By Pete Green who shot the best round of the day, a tidy 76, for a net 73 and fifth.

Ian Hanford and Mark Clucas both had 74, while Andrew Craig (75), Peter Watson (76) and James Campion (77) completed the top 10.

A lot of good putts were holed, with six players - Andrew Dodson, Mark Clucas, Ian Hanford, Garth Jameson, Pete Green and Neil McLaren - each bagging a birdie two.

So after two rounds of the Penketh Plate, Ian with a total of 143 holds a three-shot lead over Mark,(146) with Bryan (147) and Neil (149) within striking distance. Three of the best four rounds, which must include the all irons round, count towards the trophy.

The ageless Richard Pearson led the 9-holers with a countback win over Andrew Green after both totalled an impressive +4 for the front nine in the par competition. Richard shot 39 off the stick after earlier in the week posting two 40s in a strong return to form. Chris Louth was next on +3, with Warren Green claiming fourth on countback with +1.

Next Saturday (Dec 27) the 18-holers will have even fewer clubs in the bag as they play the three-club challenge off the white tees starting at 9am. The 9-holers play a net round off the back nine starting at 11am.

Merry Christmas and happy golfing everyone.
