Gareth Edwards captured the Burns Philp Cup on Saturday after his chasers failed to mount a final round charge on Saturday (Jan 24).
Gareth saved his worst for last but he had played so well over the first three rounds that he was never seriously threatened. Playing off a 15 handicap from the blue tees, he recorded 32 stableford points. However, with the best three scores counting, he finished with a winning total of 118 after previous scores of 38, 40 and 40 points to deservedly secure the silverware.
His nearest rival Peter Watson needed 38 points to pip Gareth on countback but after breaking his driver early could only muster 35 to finish second on 115 points on a day when early drizzle gave way to sunshine before the rain returned.
Ian Hanford claimed third with a total of 110, while Keri Kotua was fourth on 108 after posting the best score of the day, an 80 for 38 points.
Second behind Keri in the match of the day was Garth Jameson who roared home in 40 for 22 points and a total of 37. Bryan Ramsey took third on countback from Matt Tomczyk and Craig Barron after all recorded 36 points.
Peter (35), Aaron Kotua (34), Ian (34), Graham Eggers (34) and Gareth (32) completed the top 10.
Twos were hard to come by with Peter bagging the only one from 19ft on No 14.
No-one from the 9-holers managed a two, but Andrew Dean played well to post a net 33 playing off a 15 handicap for the back nine to take the honours. Andrew Green was again among the prizes, finishing second on 36, while Paul McCrae took third on countback from Mike De Veer and Richard Pearson after all came in with 37.
Next week (Jan 31) the 18-holers play the second round of the Stubberfield Cup, which is a net plus putts round off the blue tees, while the 9-holers play a net round off the front nine.
