- Peter Watson
Lewis Wilson secured the Burns Philp Cup with a rock steady final round on a showery Saturday (Jan 25).
The veteran leftie amassed 38 stableford points after carding 19 for both the front and back nines. Playing off the blue tees, the 22-handicapper shot a net 73 to get the job done.
His best three out of four round total of 115 in the stableford summer competition was three better than another old leftie, Peter Watson, who roared home with an even-par back nine for the day's top score of 40 points and second place with 112. Peter recovered from a double bogey-bogey start to post the best gross - a 78 - to take match of the day honours from Aaron Kotua (39) and Lewis.
Barry Rhodes pipped Andy Isle and Mark Clucas for fourth after all recorded 37 points on a day of surprisingly good scoring after tee-off was delayed because of heavy rain which saw only a small field turn out and no 9-hole competition.
Graham Galt (35) took the final Summer Fedex point on offer by finishing seventh.
Andy - who finished third in the cup with a three-round total of 111 - at least had the satisfaction of scoring the only two of the day at No 11 with a lip-out costing him the jackpot. Keri Kotua and Steve Turnell were next on 108.
Next Saturday (Feb1) we play the second round of the Stubberfield Cup, which is a net plus putts round off the blue tees, while the 9-holers play a net round off the back nine.
