Some familiar names shone in the third round of the Stubberfield Cup on Saturday (Feb 26) to put themselves in contention for overall honours.
Barry Rhodes has been a quiet over-achiever in the last few seasons and he was to the fore again with an excellent net 67 off the blue tees. With just 29 putts, the straight-hitting 29 handicapper's total of 96 in the net plus putts competition was three better than anyone else.
Paul McCrae, who has won plenty recently, finished a canny second on 99 (71 + 28), while Keri Kotua (70 + 30) showed his golf is on the up by taking third place from another successful stalwart Paul Tunnicliff (71 + 29) after both totalled 100.
Brendan Doyle (72 + 30) continued his strong form to claim fifth with 102, shading Peter Watson (74 + 28) on countback. Neil McLaren (72 + 31) took the final Summer Fedex point with 103 for seventh.
Despite the benign conditions, just seven golfers out of the field of 23 broke or matched par reflecting how tough the course can be off the blue tees, especially when the rough is up and there isn't much run.
A sciatica-suffering Richard Pearson notched a rare double - awarded the bat for a net 82 and scooping the twos pool with the only one of the day.
The fourth and final round of the Stubberfield Cup is next Saturday (March 5).
The lowest three of the four-round total will decide the winner.
