The qualifying rounds of the NBS club champs rarely bring out the best in players.

Maybe nerves get the better of some, while others find it a challenge teeing off the longer blue tees with the course still soft in places.

And so it was on Saturday, despite a cracker day for golf.

A good sized field turned out for the first round, which also doubled as the first round of the C&F Legal Stroke and counted towards the Barkman Trophy and MS Ford Shootout.

However, only one golfer - Mike Williams - played under or to his handicap. The leftie shot a tidy net 71 playing off an 18-handicap to take match of the day honours and make the early running in the Junior A division.

Seniors Keri Kotua and Pete Green and intermediate Neil McLaren were next with 73 each, with Keri claiming second on countback from Pete with Neil relegated to fourth.

Another senior, Dean Goodman, and intermediate Jason Lee were next with 74 apiece, while the quartet of Junior A graders Lewis Wilson and Ian Hanford and seniors Peter Watson and James Campion all came in with 76 to complete the top 10.

The best gross of the day was recorded by Pete G with a steady 79, with Keri next with an 80.

Surprisingly, given the benign conditions, nobody nabbed a two so the kitty jackpots for the third successive week.

Among the 9-holers, Ali Mawby grabbed another victory on countback from Paul McCrae after both finished with 17 stableford points off the back nine. Sally Quinlivan and Paul Tunnicliff shared third with 15 points each, while Paul M boosted his winnings with a two.

Next Saturday (Sept 2) we play the second round of NBS club champs qualifying and the C&F Legal Stroke, which also counts as another round in the Barkman Trophy and MS Ford Shootout.

The 9-holers will play a net round off the front nine.
