Barry Rhodes surged to the top of the leaderboard after winning the second round of the Six-hole Challenge on Saturday (July 27).

On a mild winter's day, the 27-handicapper was in top form in losing only three of his 18 holes in posting a net 68 off the white tees.

His 25 points against his three hapless rivals was the best of the day in the format where you play three six-hole games of matchplay and get two points for every hole won and one point for a half.

Paul Tunnicliff - boosted by birdieing two of the four par threes - was another to prosper. His well-compiled net 68 saw him earn 24 points and secure second on the day. Close behind were Peter Watson who claimed third on countback from Gareth Edwards after both finished with 23 points.

Next were Garth Jameson (22) and the trio of Graham Galt, Jason Lee and Keri Kotua with 20 points each.

So with one round remaining, Barry leads on 45 points from Paul and Lewis Wilson on 42 and Garth on 41. Still with an outside chance are Peter, Dean Goodman and James Campion on 39 points each.

The best gross of the day was recorded by James with a 75, while Keri (78) and Dean (79) also broke 80.

The twos money was shared by Paul, James, Dean and Andrew Craig but Paul left with the biggest grin after bagging a sizeable jackpot for getting two of them.

John Dixon showed he still has plenty of game by totalling 20 stableford points for the back nine to be the best of the nine-holers. He was followed by Paul McCrae (19) and Heather Carey (18) and Phil Sellers (18). Both Paul and Phil improved their scores with a birdie two each.

Next week (August 3) we play the third and final round of the Six-hole Challenge, while the nine-holers play a net round off the front nine.
