Most golfers dream about a hole in one but few achieve it.

Barry Rhodes can now stop dreaming after playing the perfect shot on No 11 during the third round of the Burns Philp Cup on Saturday.

The 24-handicapper's eight iron never left the line of the flag 115m away before disappearing down the hole for his first ace which gave his average round a major boost and ensured some extra celebrations in the clubhouse afterwards.

While that was undoubtedly the shot of the day, it was Brendon Doyle who emerged victorious after posting a net 70 for 38 stableford points in warm and gusty conditions off the white tees.

The big man - who played off a 16 handicap - seems to invariably play well over summer and his round featured an outward 42 and an inward 44.

He was able to fend off some hot competition from Andrew Craig and Paul Tunnicliff who each ended with 37 points, with Andrew claiming second on countback.

Peter Green had the proverbial round of two halves - a scruffy 43 on the front nine followed by a brilliant 33 on the back nine which featured three birdies. His 76 off the stick was the best gross of the day and his 36 points was good enough for fourth on countback from Bryan Ramsey.

Greg Mann was next on countback from Steve Turnell and Peter Watson after all finished with 35 points, with Peter's 78 the only other score under 80.

Andy Isle and Barry Rhodes rounded out the top 10 with 34 points apiece.

The Kotua boys cleaned up the twos money, with Keri completing the jackpot with birdies at No 2 and 11, while Aaron got his two at No 14.

Next Saturday (Feb 4) we play the second round of the Stubberfield Cup, which a net plus putts round off the white tees.
