The frontrunners for NBS club champs honours are starting to emerge after the completion of the second round of qualifying on Saturday.

On a sun-drenched course with a surprising amount of run for early spring, club captain Peter Green shot the best gross, a very handy 78 off the blue tees, to top the senior standings with one more qualifying round to go. The best two rounds decide the top eight seedings in each division. Peter also took match of the day honours with the best net, a 72, which also sees him lead the C&F Legal Stroke after two of four rounds. It also earned him maximum Barkman Trophy points and improve his MS Ford Shootout average.

James Campion came in with a 79 off the stick for the only other score under 80 posted by a good sized field to strengthen his hold on the second qualifying spot among the seniors. His score included twos at No 2 and 14, which saw him take home a sizeable jackpot.

Jason Lee took a big step to claiming top spot in the intermediate grade with his second consecutive 87, while Jonathan Tuheke got his challenge back on track with a matching 87.

Despite blowing out with a 99, Mike Williams is still the man to catch in the Junior A division, although Jack Denton and Ian Hanford are chasing him hard.

Warren Carey has the edge in the Junior B grade after a 97, with Mick Leggett and Mike Savage his nearest challengers.

In the match of the day, the minor placings were all decided on countback after four players finished with a net 73. Jack sneaked second from Warren who edged Mick for third, with Maurice Woodhouse pushed back to fourth.

They were followed by Jason and Jonathan on 74 each. Ian and Jim McMullan were next on 76 each, while Phil Sellers, Mike S and Andy Isle rounded out the top 12 with 77s.

Peter and Mike S boosted their scores and wallets by scoring a two each.

Among the 9-holers, Paul McCrae increased his lead in the season-long standings with another win after shooting a net 34 for the front nine. Sally Quinlivan secured second on countback from Heather Carey after both recorded 37s.

Next Saturday (Sept 9) we play the third round of the C&F Legal off the white tees, which also counts towards the Barkman Trophy and MS Ford Shootout, while the 9-holers play a par round off the back nine.
