Phil Sellers won his second successive Barkman Trophy round on Saturday to open up a handy points lead after three rounds of the season-long competition.
His neat net 69 off the white tees in calm, clear conditions was comfortably ahead of Keri Kotua who shot a 72 to secure second. Playing to a 20 handicap, Phil went out in 46 and back in 43 – which included a birdie two at No 14 - for an 89 off the stick. Keri’s 80 was the best gross of the day.
Phil’s win means he leads the Barkman standings by nine points from Graham Eggers with Peter Watson another two back, with another 11 rounds to play.
Aaron Kotua took third on countback from Chris Louth and Maurice Woodhouse after all three posted 73. Next was Peter (75), with Graham – who shared the twos money with a birdie at No 11 - taking the last Barkman point on offer with a 76.
A smaller field than normal teed off with a contingent of club members opting instead to play the annual Golden Nugget tournament at Reefton.
Saturday’s round also counted towards the Shootout, with Phil, Keri, Peter and Aaron making the early running with nine rounds remaining before the final.
Next Saturday (June 6) we play the quarterfinals of the Individual Matchplay off the blue tees: The draw is Maurice Woodhouse v James Campion, Gabriel Tijsen v Jarrod Huss, Richard Pearson v Andrew Craig and Matt Tomczyk v Peter Watson.
The match of the day for all others is a stableford off the white tees.
