Club results for 31/5/25

  • Peter Watson

Matt Tomczyk and Maurice Woodhouse are the Brebde Senior/Junior champions for 2025.

The pair - who were never headed - outlasted Peter Watson and Dave Huntley 2/1 to deservedly take the title on a sunny but windy day. Ironically Peter and Maurice were partners last year when they finished second but this time there was no stopping Mo who putted superbly and drove soundly on the way to a net 69 off the white tees in muddy conditions while Matt backed him up well with a 74. They were just too steady for Peter (73) and Dave (75) who made errors at critical times.

Mo and Matt made the best possible start, winning the opening three holes after Mo holed two long putts for pars and then chipped deftly for a bogey five on No 3 where he got a shot.

Peter - who gave Matt seven shots, Mo 10 and Dave 15 - cut the deficit when he sunk a lengthy downhiller on No 4 for a birdie three before Dave won No 5 with a net par.

It was back to two up after Mo took No 6 with a net par, but Peter responded with a birdie three at the next and a par at No 8 to get it back to all square.

But Mo reclaimed the lead with a net par on the par five No 9 and then sunk another good putt for a five to get it back to 2-up.

Dave parred the short No 11 to stay in touch until Matt made an excellent par four at the long uphill No 12 and then got up and down on the par-three No 14 for another win when Peter missed a short par putt for a half.

The writing was on the wall when Mo's bogey at No 15 ensured a half.

Lying dormie, Peter extended the match with a par at No 16 but Mo's conceded par at the next ended proceedings.

In a catch-up Individual Matchplay match Ian Hanford proved too strong for Dave Blake in winning 5/4. Ian - who got one shot off Dave - was 2-up at the turn and thereafter never gave Dave a look in. Ian won No 10, 12 and 14 with a bogey, par and bogey stretch without conceding a hole to wrap it up early.

In the match of the day, a net round off the white tees, Aaron Rodrigues topped a small field with a net 72 playing off an 18 handicap. Chris Louth finished second with a 76 while Roma Elkington was third on 77.

Paul McCrae was once again the best of the 9-holers with a net 39 off the back nine, while Lloyd Moyle claimed second on countback with a 41. Daniel Allen scored the only two of the day.

Next Saturday (June 7) we play the quarter-finals of the Individual Matchplay, with Peter Watson up against Bryce Vincent, Ian Hanford versing Maurice Woodhouse, Paul Tunnicliff taking on the winner of the Pete Green/Keri Kotua clash and Mike Williams and Phil Sellers doing battle. The 9-holers play a par round off the front nine.
