Club results for 31/8/24

Playing good golf was at a premium in tough conditions for the second round of qualifying for the club champs on Saturday (Aug 31).

While the forecast heavy rain thankfully stayed away until the competition was over, golfers still had to cope with a blustery wind and a water-logged course which was playing even longer off the blue tees.

Unsurprisingly most struggled to post even a half decent score and no-one played to their handicap, although a handful went close. On the downside, more than a third of the field were disqualified after playing off the wrong tee block or failed to finish.

With the day also doubling as the second round of the C & F Legal Stroke and counting towards both the Barkman Trophy and Shootout, there was a lot at stake.

James Campion showed why he was the lowest handicapper in the field by shooting the best gross of the day, a 78, with his net score of 73 good enough to win the match of the day.

Jim McMullan took second on countback from Pete Green after both carded 74, while Geoff Halkett finished fourth on countback from Peter Watson after both came in with 75.

The final Barkman points went to Dean Goodman and Maurice Woodhouse with 76 each.

Putting was the least of most golfer's problems with five twos recorded, with Aaron Kotua grabbing two and the jackpot in a truncated round. Richard Pearson, Mike Williams and Pete G slotted one each.

Lloyd Moyle was comfortably the best of the nine-holers shooting a +1 for the front 9 to win the par competition. Next best was Warren Carey on -3.

So after two of three qualifying rounds for the club champs, James lead the seniors with a gross total of 157 from Pete G on 159. Dean is back in third on 167.

Peter Watson tops the intermediates on 174, ahead of Jonathan Tuheke (179) and Richard Pearson (185).

Maurice Woodhouse (192) and Matt Tomczyk (196) are the best of the junior As who have completed two rounds, while Lewis Wilson (204) and Jim McMullan (213) head the junior Bs.

The final qualifying round is on September 14, with a player's best two scores counting.

With the C & F Legal Stroke halfway through, there is a three-way tie at the top between James, Pete G and Dean on net scores of 147. They are followed by Jonathan (151), Peter W (152), Andy Isle (153) and Maurice (154). The next rounds are on September 7 and 14, with the best three counting.
