Matt Tomczyk and Maurice Woodhouse are the first pairing through to the final of the Brebde Senior/Junior as the sun made a welcome appearance on Saturday after rain earlier in the week had made the course challenging.

Going into the match, most pundits may have picked Andy Isle and Neil McLaren to have the edge but Matt and Mo complemented each other well to prevail 2/1. Two up after nine after Matt and Mo both won holes with birdie twos, they held firm over the back nine. Andy and Neil got within one but weren't accurate enough off the tee to put real pressure on with Mo leading the way with a net 71 for a deserved victory.

The two catch-up quarter-finals were both close affairs. With his partner James Barton unavailable, Dave Blake had to play Garth Jameson and Mike Williams by himself. Five down midway through the match, Dave fought all the way before finally succumbing 2/1 against an increasingly nervous Garth and Mike who recorded net 78 and 76 respectively. Mike bagged a welcome birdie two on No 11 to help their cause.

The other quarter-final between Jonathan Tuheke and Lewis Wilson against Peter Watson and Dave Huntley wasn't decided until the 18th hole when Peter poured in a 26 foot putt for a par to halve the hole and secure a 1 up win. He had earlier binned a similar length putt on No 17 for a birdie to put him and Dave in front. Peter - who shot a gross 79 - had earlier birdied the par-five No 9 to put them 3-up but Lewis - who hit some wonderful three woods close to the hole- and Jono - who made some winning putts - came roaring back over the back nine to square it up with two to go before Peter's late hammer blows.

In the match of the day, a stableford off the white tees, Gabriel Tijsen marked his return to the club with a winning 33 points. His net 75 included successive birdies at No 7 and 8 until the heavy conditions took their toll on him and most of the rest of the field. Pete Green - fresh from a dominant win last week - shot 79 off the stick after a front nine 37 for 31 points to claim second. Takaka club member Rob Ancell - who was another to slot a birdie two - finished third with 30 points. He was followed by Mick Leggett (29) and Geoff Halkett and Warren Carey with 28 each.

Sue Moyle returned to form to easily be the best of the 9-holers, with 20 stableford points playing off the front nine. Warwick King took second on countback from Paul McCrae after both came in with 16 points.

Next Saturday (May 10) we play the second Brebde semi-final between Garth Jameson and Mike Williams v Peter Watson and Dave Huntley, while the match of the day is a par round off the white tees. The 9-holers play a par round off the back nine.
