Peter Watson rolled back the years and rolled in the putts to win the Stubberfield Cup on Saturday with a final round charge.

The veteran leftie and club captain’s net 68 off the blue tees which included just 25 putts for a total of 93 saw him vault past joint third round leaders James Campion and Andrew Craig who didn’t play the fourth and final round.

With the best three rounds counting in the net plus putts competition, Peter’s total of 288 (100+95+93) saw him comfortably win the silverware as well as the match of the day.

Andrew – with the lowest net round - took second on countback from James after both totalled 297. They were followed by Pete Green (300), Neil McLaren (301), Andy Isle (302), Keri Kotua (303), Gareth Edwards (304), Steve Russell (305) and Aaron Kotua (310).

Peter’s 77 off the stick in calm and overcast conditions, which included a triple bogey and two birdies, was the best gross of the day, with Dean Goodman’s 79 the only other score under 80.

Geoff Halkett rediscovered some form to claim second place on the day on countback, shooting a net 68 to go with 31 putts for 99. Dean (71+28) posted the same total but was pushed back into third.

Next were Bryan Ramsey (76+25) on 101, Pete G (75+29) on 104 and Barry Rhodes (73+33) on 106, with Mick Leggett (76+30) on 106 earning the final Summer Fedex point for finishing seventh.

Dean and Geoff shared the twos money with one each.

Lloyd Moyle was the best of the nine-holers, with an excellent 23 stableford points off the front nine. Barbara Kotua was next with a tidy 21 points, just ahead of Mike Kirkwood on countback. Paul Tunnicliff and Phil Sellers were just out of the prizes with 20 points each. David Monopoli brightened his round with a birdie two.

Next Saturday (March 15) we play an Irish stableford off the blue tees, while the nine-holers play a net round off the back nine.
