Matthew Watkins made a rare Saturday appearance a memorable one when he won the first round of the season-long Barkman Trophy.

The 16-handicapper coped admirably with a blustery wind and recently renovated greens to shoot a net 70 to head the Easter filed. He went out in 44 and back in 42 for a tidy 86 off the stick.

Steve Turnell returned to form with a 71 to claim second, while Dean Goodman showed that a break hadn't harmed his game by coming home in a 72 for third.

Geoff Halkett (73) finished fourth. He was followed by the trio of Lindsay Brooks, Paul Tunnicliff and Andy Isle who each returned 74 to earn the final trophy points on.  Jonathan Tukehe and Ian Hanford with 75 apiece completed the top nine.

The day also doubled as the first round of the Shootout, which is now sponsored by MS Ford. Entry this year is free and prize money has been doubled.

Dean and Ian shared the twos money.

There was also an encouraging start to our 9-hole competition on Saturday, with 12 people entering, including seven women. Graham Galt took home first prizes with a net 35. Luke Brooke-Taylor of Marlborough grabbed second on countback from Heather Carey after both shot 36.

Next Saturday (April 15) is the first round of the Brebde senior/junior, which is a competition with drawn pairs, while the 9-holers will play a stableford round.
