Rob Willems mastered the appalling conditions to grab two trophies and head the senior standings after the second qualifying round of the club champs on Saturday (Aug 10).

The 10 handicapper shot an excellent 77 off the stick from the blue tees to blow the rest of the field away, most of whom struggled to cope with the constant rain and muddy conditions, with three names being added to the bat. His round included three birdies and the only two of the day.

His nett 67 was good enough to take out the DB Stroke for the best nett total over all grades for the first two qualifying rounds of the club champs. His total of 142 was one better than the ever-steady Paul Tunnicliff (143) who claimed second by another stroke from Dave Blake (144).

Rob's gross total of 161 over the two rounds was also best in the senior division, while Paul Tunnicliff (175) prevailed comfortably in the intermediate grade. The Junior A stroke title went to Dave Blake on 185, while Jim McMullan hung tough to take out the Junior B grade on 257.

In the match of the day, a nett round, Rob's 67 was easily the best. Paul pipped Graham Eggers for second on countback after both shot 70, while Dave finished fourth with a 71. Keri Kotua was alone in fifth with 73. He was followed by Steve Russell and Maurice Woodhouse on 75. Brendon Doyle and Warren Carey rounded out the top 10 with 76s.

Next Saturday is the final qualifying round of the club champs, with players counting their two best scores from the three rounds to see if they qualify for the top eight playoffs, which start on September 7.
