On a day of hot scoring, Maurice Woodhouse outgunned the chasing pack to take the early lead in the Burns Philp competition on Saturday (Dec 7).

The 14-handicapper was at the top of his game in shooting 79 off the stick and amassing 43 stableford points in the first of four rounds of the  summer stableford event played in blustery and gloomy conditions off the white tees.

He was chased all the way by Warwick King who pipped Keri Kotua for second after both ended with 42 points. Keri shot an impressive 75.

Dave Blake claimed fourth with 41 points. He was followed by a trio on 40 points each - Steve Russell, Steve Turnell and Aaron Kotua.

Next was Brendan Doyle with 39 points and Paul Tunnicliff and Rod Thomason on 38 points.

Jonathan Tuheke scooped the twos pool after recording the only one of the day.

Next week (December 14) is the second round of the Penketh Plate, which is al all-irons round off the white tees.
