Maurice Woodhouse won the match of the day honours, Neil McLaren was in the money but it was Paul Tunnicliff who once again walked away with the silverwear on an eventful Saturday (Feb 27)

Playing the fourth and final round of the Stubberfield Cup off the white tees in calm conditions, Maurice shot the best nett of the day, a 68, to go with just 25 putts, for a low total of 93. His playing partner, Paul, finished just two shots behind on 95 (71 + 24) after an excellent day on the dewy greens. In a strong return to form Bryan Ramsey with a total of 96 (69 + 27) was just one back in third.

Lindsay Brooks had a day off from bowls to claimed fourth on 99 (70 + 29). Richard Pearson (74 + 28) headed a trio on 102 on countback from Steve Russell (75 + 27) and Paul McCrae (78 +24), who claimed the last Fedex point for the day.

After starting with a 9 at No1, Neil McLaren's day improved with a birdie two at No 2. It got $250 better at No 14 when he drained a shortish putt for another two to win the first jackpot for almost a year. To show the vagaries of golf, he then racked up a 10 on the next hole, but at least the beer tasted sweet at the end.

Once the best three of the four rounds of the Stubberfield Cup were counted, Paul Tunnicliff came out of top - just - with a total of 297, one better than Bryan Ramsey on 298. Third was Paul McCrae on 300 followed by Steve Russell on 303 and Maurice Woodhouse on 305.

Next Saturday (Mar 6) we have a break from formal competition to encourage members to enter the NBS Nelson Open, a tier one event. However, there will still be a match of the day - a stableford round off the white tees - at Waahi Taakaro for those who don't want to enter the Nelson tournament.
