The new year began with a slow burn due to the scorching weather, persistent hangovers and some questionable clothing that looked more suited for the bedroom.

There were plenty of odd couples in the four ball best ball format with drawn partners played with just irons off the white tees.

The last minute pairing of Neil McLaren and Peter Watson proved particularly productive as they combined well in shooting a net 64 to comfortably win the match of the day. Peter shot 75 off the stick - the best of the day - in a round that featured one birdie and 13 pars, while Neil contributed when it counted, including one of four twos scored during the day, on his way to an 87.

The others were scored by Geoff Halkett, Andy Isle and Keri Kotua.

The battle for the minor placings was close, with Peter Green and Andrew Craig taking second on countback from Steve Russell and Paul Tunnicliff after both returned 67s. James Campion and Steve Turnell, who also came in with a 67, were pushed back to fourth.

Keri Kotua and Brendan Doyle were next with 68. They were followed by four pairings - Jim McMullan and Jasper Broad-Kolff, Andy Isle and Jonathan Tuheke, Warren Carey and Dave Slow, and Lloyd Patchett and Geoff Halkett - on 69.

Next week (Jan 8) is the second round of the Penketh Plate, a net round off the blue tees.
