An all irons day rewards the good ball strikers and straight hitters and Lewis Wilson did both with aplomb on Saturday to easily win the third round of the Penketh Plate.

The veteran leftie - who also chipped well - was at the top of his game in shooting 86 off the white tees for an imposing net 67 in the increasingly parched conditions which made judging approaches to the greens tricky. It included an impressive inward nine of 41.

Peter Green continued his strong form with a net 70 for second, with his gross 78 the equal best of the day alongside Peter Watson.

Steve Turnell took third on countback from Paul Tunnicliff after both finished with net 72.

Next was Andrew Craig on 73 followed by Peter W and Mick Leggett with matching 74s.

Roma Elkington, Lloyd Patchett, Barry Rhodes and Dean Goodman rounded out the top 11 by coming in with 76s.

The twos money was shared by Lewis, Steve Russell and Peter W.

With three of the four rounds played, Peter W leads the standings with a net total of 216. He is followed by Steve R and Warwick King on 224, Lloyd (229) and Bryan Ramsey (237) of those who have completed all three rounds. Another 10 golfers have played two rounds so still have a chance. Players take their best three of the four rounds, with one of them must being the all irons round.

The fourth round is on February 19.

Next Saturday we play the first round of the Stubberfield Cup, a net plus putts competition over four rounds, off the blue tees. Next weekend is also when the Rarangi Spectacular is on over in Marlborough.
