To paraphrase Forrest Gump, matchplay with drawn partners is a bit like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get.

So it was on Saturday (March 27) for the first round of the Brebde senior/junior with each pairing drawn out of a rather faded hat.

And for some unfortunate players, their partners played like Forrest, while others proved a perfect match, if only for a week or two.

In spite of the forced marriages some excellent golf was played, particularly during the clash between Steve Russell and Andrew Craig verse Paul Tunnicliff and Neil McLaren. All four shot nett rounds below 70 but in the end Steve (nett 66, gross 77 which was the best of the day) and Andrew (nett 67) proved just a touch too good in prevailing 2/1.

The closest tie of the day was Rangi Kohe and Jason Ilton's 1 up victory over Paul McCrae and Warren Carey, despite a nett 70 from Paul which included the only two of the day.

Warwick King had one of his best rounds - a nett 67 - to help his partner Andy Isle to a 4/2 win over Graham Strickett and Mike Murphy.

Dave Blake and Jim McMullan putted their socks off to easily account for Peter Watson and Tom Weiss 5/4.

Bryan Ramsey was another to have a day to remember with a nett 65 (78 off the stick) - the best of the day - to propel him and his trusty sidekick Lewis Wilson (nett 69) into the next round with a thumping 6/5 result over Aaron Kotua and Bradley Crabb.

And Jonathan Tuheke (nett 70) and Steve Turnell were just as dominant over Maurice Woodhouse and Hamish Harvey in their 6/5 stroll.

For those few not in the Brebde, Alan Church ran away with the match of the day, a stableford round, with 39 points. Next was Ian Hanford on 36 points.

The second round of the Brebde is on April 10, which again will be off the white tees starting at 10am as daylight saving will have ended.

For those looking for somewhere to play next Saturday (April 3) when our golf course is closed because of a national mountain bike event, please consider entering Totaradale's Easter Tournament on Saturday and Sunday which is a tier one tournament or rock up to Nelson Golf Club where you can play for half price due to our reciprocal agreement. We reopen on the Sunday, although the No 10 tee and practice area will still be out of action.
