Andy Isle was made to work hard by Mick Leggett before prevailing in the first round of the Individual Matchplay on Saturday.

Their match was the only one played, with one other postponed until later in the week and 14 byes.

On a day on plenty of action and distraction with the opening of the Maitai Recreation Hub, Andy was the first to settle, winning two of the first three holes, despite giving away 32 shots.

Mick, however, won the next three to take the lead, before Andy levelled at No 7 with a par only to lose No 10 with a bogey.

The decisive break came soon after with Andy winning three in a row, and while he dropped No 15 he parred No 16 and No 17 to close it out 3/1 inspite of not being at his best.

In the match of the day, a net round also played off the blue tees, Andrew Craig was the only one to shoot under his handicap in winning with a 71.

Paul McCrae claimed second with 72, while Steve Russell stormed home with a 74 for third.

Next were Paul Tunnicliff and Peter Green on 75. They were followed by Keri Kotua and Roma Elkington (77) and Warwick King and Rob Ancell (78).

Rob Ancell and Geoff Halkett shared the twos money.

Next Saturday (May 28) is the second round of the matchplay which is again played off the blue tees.
