  • Peter Watson

Peter Watson got off to a good start in the Penketh Plate on Saturday (Nov 30) by edging out Terry Hemi and Jim McMullan on countback. All recorded nett 70s off the blue tees in hot and breezy conditions on a course in top condition.

The first of the summer season events, the nett competition is played over four rounds, with the best three counting which must include the all irons round on December 14. It also carries Summer Fedex points.

Peter shot 78 off the stick, which included three birdies, but nearly blew it with a double bogey at the last. Terry recorded a gross 85, while Jim ended with a 115.

Tom Weiss pipped Steve Russell for fourth on countback after both finished with nett 71s. Maurice Woodhouse, Dave Blake and Paul McCrae followed with 72s. Rod Thomason and Andy Isle came in with 73s to complete the top 10.

The improving greens - which are started to roll very nicely - gave up six twos, with one each going to Elton Netto, Paul McCrae, Andy Isle, Steve Russell, Warren Carey and Peter Watson.

Next week is the first round of the Burns Philp, a four-round stableford competition, with the best three counting. It also carries Fedex points.

Unless otherwise announced, all summer competitions will tee-off at 9am. Please report to the starter by 8.30am.
