Countback costs Old Hickory team a win

Our Old Hickory team came up just short at Totaradale on Thursday (Sept 4), being denied victory on countback as Tasman took home the trophy.
There was some compensation though as we moved up one spot to second in the Club of the Year standings behind Totaradale who widened their lead.
Led by an excellent 38 stableford points from Lindsay Brooks with good support from Maurice Woodhouse (36), Barry Rhodes (34) and captain Ian Hanford (32), we totalled 140 points. Peter Watson (26) and Richard Pearson (25) struggled - as did many golfers - despite the course being in good condition.
Waahi Taakaro's tally was matched by Tasman, with Wayne Frost (36), John O'Neil (35) and Mike McGee (35) the main contributors.
However, Tasman got the nod on countback after its fifth scorer finished well ahead of ours.
The home team finished third on 138 thanks largely due to Denis Hall, whose 39 points was the top score of the day.
Nelson - with Dave Duggan (36) prominent - was fourth on 124.
Next was Motueka (119), while Takaka and Greenacres brought up the rear on 115 each. The popgun went to Greenacres on countback.
Just five golfers matched or bettered their handicap and there was only one two which was slotted by Totaradale's Brian Biggs.
After five of eight rounds, Totaradale (976) holds a comfortable lead over Waahi Taakaro (945) in the Club of the Year standings, although we will be hoping to narrow the gap with the next round at Waahi Taakaro on October 2.
Tasman (930) climbs to third, with Motueka (927), Nelson (920) and Greenacres (912) all with ground to make up. Takaka (900) languishes in last place.
