Old Hickory team caught short

Our Old Hickory overcame the loss of a player before tee-off to put in solid performance at Nelson on Thursday (July 1).

The team finished a close fourth, despite playing with a man short after Peter Watson had to withdraw after injuring his back warming up.

But led by an excellent 38 stableford points from Graham Strickett and 34 from Phil Sellers, we finished only five points shy of Tasman which won a tight race in glorious winter conditions for golf.

Our other scorers were Mike Murphy (28) and Rob Shand (26) while Tom Kennedy crashed and burned for 24 points after a good start.

Graham was one of only two golfers to score a birdie two which earned him a good supply of new balls.

There was a close battle for top team honours, with Tasman triumphing after amassing 131 points, just two ahead of Nelson (129). Takaka and Greenacres shared third on 128. We were next on 126 followed by Motueka (117). Totaradale took home the popgun after totalling just 110 points.

The next round is on August 5 at Totaradale.
