A freezing day reduced the Golden Oldies field but it didn't prevent some hot golf.

With snow dusting the upper Maitai Valley, only the hardy ventured out but Andrew Dean and Richard Pearson didn't let if affect them by sharing the honours in the first round of the Laurie Ashby Cup with 20 stableford points each for the front nine. The cup is played over three nine-hole stableford rounds, with the best two counting.

Richard had double reason to celebrate when he claimed a handsome collect for winning the hidden hole with a net birdie on No 1. His 40 off the stick from the white tees was the best gross of the day.

Phil Sellers - helped by the only two of the day - and Ian Hanford finished joint second on 17 points, while Mick Leggett and Ray Hopgood tied for third on 16 points.

Next week (Aug 17) the Golden Oldies play the eighth round of the Worley Cup, which is a par round over the front nine.
