Roma Elkington won the second round of the Laurie Ashby Trophy on Thursday (Sept 12) but it was Jack Denton who provided the highlight with the fourth hole-in-one of his lengthy career.

Jack - who still plays off a handy 20 handicap - played the perfect 7 iron on No 11, pitching the ball just in front of the green and watching it roll gently into the cup. It was his second ace at Waahi Taakaro following one last September. His other two came within a week when he was a member at Kaikoura Golf Club. It's a record few will match.

Jack's ace enabled him to finish on 18 stableford points for the back nine, which was only good enough for eighth on a decent spring day for golf.

Roma had one of his best rounds for a long time, with his net 33 worth a healthy 21 stableford. This was one better than Ray Hopgood (20) who finished alone in second.

Lloyd Moyle, helped by the only two of the day at No 14, Grant Fergusson and Dick Carter shared third on 19 points. They were followed by Richard Pearson, Trevor Atkinson and Jack on 18.

Next week (Sept 19) the Golden Oldies play another round of the Worley Trophy which is a net round off the back nine.
