Andrew Dean is having one of those seasons that everyone dreams of.
He is on the cusp of completing a sweep of all but one of the Golden Oldies competitions for 2024 after he and his drawn partner Phil Sellers romped to victory in the Langley Trophy on Thursday (Nov 28).
Playing off a 16 handicap for the back nine, Andrew posted an unbeatable +6 to easily win the second and final round of the competition. It could have been higher but he messed up his last hole. Phil chipped in with a +2 score to take their overall score to an insurmountable +13. The next best pairing was +4 for the two rounds.
It means Andrew has won all three trophies completed, with just two to decide. He will take on Ian Hanford in the final of the individual matchplay competition for Guthardt Cup shortly, while Phil holds an unassailable lead in the season-long Worley Trophy which finishes this month.
On Thursday Andrew's score was twice that of the duo of John Shaw and Jack Denton who finished second on +3. A group of five comprising Phil, Maurice Woodhouse, Michael Doyle, Graham Galt and Bryan Ramsey shared third on +2 on a day of generally good scoring.
Another group of five made up of Trevor Atkinson, Tom Kennedy, Jim McMullan, Noel Shaw and Paul Tunnicliff also finished under their handicaps with +1.
Despite the recently cored greens, four players - Bryan, Paul, Maurice and Grant Fergusson - slotted a two each, while Grant took home a decent collect after striking the hidden hole.
