Leatai shield surrendered

Our small team of seven fought hard but was outgunned by Blenheim on their home turf in our annual Leatai Shield challenge on Saturday (Dec 11).

It continued the tradition of the home team taking the spoils on what turned out to be a good day for golf with the rain staying away and the Pollard Park course in good condition.

Lewis Wilson starred for Waahi Taakaro with an excellent 41 stableford points, which included a two. He received good backup from Warwick King with 38 points with the next best being Paul Tunnicliff and Steve Russell with 33 points. Peter Watson and Alan Church came in with 32 points each while Maurice Woodhouse had an off day with 28 points. Paul and Peter also grabbed twos, with Peter going within a whisker of a hole-in-one.

While our stableford average of 33.85 points was respectable given our limited experience playing the tight tree-lined course, it was never going to be enough when eight of the Blenheim team scored over 40 points each, with the best totaling an eye-watering 46.  In the end Blenheim reclaimed the shield with an average score of 35.95.

We thank them for their hospitality and look forward to hosting them next year.
