Kameran Clarke made it two wins on the bounce when he won the Total Golf Maitai Masters at Waahi Taakaro Golf Course on Saturday.

Just a week after recording the best gross score at the Kina Open, the 16-year-old Nelson College student  cantered to six-shot victory in the annual 27-hole tournament in the Maitai Valley.

Playing off a plus one handicap – the lowest in the field – Clarke laboured to a 4-over 76 in the morning round before roaring home with a two-under 34 in the afternoon for a total score of 110.

The young Tasman rep comfortably saw off Motueka’s James Campion (78/38) and Greenacre’s Nick Ludbrook (78/40).

Despite being played in ideal conditions, Clarke was the only one to break par in either round on the Nelson City Council course which traditionally plays much tougher than it looks and demands accuracy off the tee and into the small greens.

Although still bearing the scars of an early summer drought followed by several storms which flooded part of the tree-lined 6000m course, green staff had worked hard throughout the week to get it into reasonable shape for the event.

Clarke was ``stoked’’ to have won the tournament at his third attempt.

``I’ve played here quite a bit so knew the course but I had to scramble a bit on the first 18. I chipped pretty well and got up and down and that’s what saved me.

``I played much better in the afternoon and holed a couple of good putts.’’

Waahi Taakaro golfers dominated the other major prizes, with Keri Kotua winning the intermediate gross with a total of 122, Jonathan Tuheke the junior gross with 136 and Paul McCrae winning the overall best nett with an excellent 103, highlighted by a 66 in the morning.

A number of those players who won prizes - which went down to sixth place in both gross and nett in each division - had left by the time the results were collated and announced. They should contact our manager Gordon Davidson at the clubhouse on 5487771 or 5487301 or 0275473200 to arrange collection.

Many thanks to tournament convenor Rob Willems for his sterling efforts and to those who helped out on the day and to prepare for the tournament and to tidy up afterwards. A good day was enjoyed by all.
