Old Hickory passes on popgun

It was hardly a positive performance at Motueka on Thursday (Oct 6) but our Old Hickory team did just enough to prevent retaining the popgun for another month.

That dubious honour went to Nelson who finished last, five points behind Waahi Taakaro on a day of generally poor scoring despite good overhead conditions.

With the course playing long after rain the previous week, only three players in the field of 44 played to their handicap and just 14 scored 30 or more stableford points.

Richard Pearson led our team with 32 points, with the next best being Ian Hanford (29). Our other scorers were Mick Leggett and Barry Rhodes with 25 points each, while Phil Sellers (22) and Mike Murphy (21) had days to forget.

Unsurprisingly the home team romped to victory. Anchored by Kevin Beach, whose 37 points was the best of the day, and Bernie Walsh (36), Motueka totalled 139 to win by a whopping 18 points from Greenacres and Takaka who each finished with 121. They were followed by Tasman (120), Totaradale (114) and Waahi Taakaro (111). Nelson, with just 106 points, brought up the rear.

The next round is at Takaka on November 3.
